Mey Rude of Autostraddle praised issue 17 of the comic where Jo, a "girl of color with two dads", talks about how she is a trans girl, and how it will affect other trans youth. [16] She added that representation like Jo gives kids an opportunity to see themselves in a new light, calling her appearance and role in the comic "something radical", while wondering what this would mean for then-"upcoming Lumberjanes movie", later turned into a series. Caitlin Chappell of CBR argued that the comic easily appeals to kids who like Scooby-Doo, Gravity Falls, and Adventure Time. She further argued that the cast includes several LGBTQ characters like Jo, a de facto leader and trans girl, while saying that Molly and Mal are an "adorable couple." At the same time, she stated that those behind the creation of the series not only talk about the "wonder of camp", but prove that "accepting queer identities should be the norm for children and adults." [17] Finally, Tina Howard of Teen Vogue pointed to "queer leads" in the comics as a whole. She specifically stated that the series writes "LGBT stories that are completely appropriate for young people", while calling it funny, smart, and noting that "features queer and trans young women". She also called it "vital for LGBT kids". [18]Art Shift: The first four issues have a different art style from either series. The last two issues also end up having a different art style than the rest. I hated Kyle's (he's Olive's non-boyfriend) stupid hat, though. He wore it in almost every scene and I just wanted to rip the *& Greater-Scope Villain: Louise's parents, who cast a spell on her and the entire lodge so that she could be happy. A graphic novel about the most prestigious school in Gotham City. But of course, this is Gotham City we are talking about so this school is a bit ... special!

DC's Saved by the Belle Reve - This is an anthology book that includes the first official Gotham Academy story by the original creative team since Gotham Academy Second Semester! As I'm writing, this is the last of the major Gotham Academy stories. It doesn’t help that she keeps talking about the past summer where something happened that changed her life and we never find out what. But that about sums up her character: the reader is kept at arm’s length the whole time so it’s that much harder to give a damn about what happens to her. Lumberjanes #1 Arrives Next Month. Retrieved 2014-11-14.Bruce Wayne enrolled Olive in Gotham Academy so she could be monitored while still being around other children. During the summer of her freshman year, she had a traumatic experience that required intervention by Batman. She turned to reading and journaling, finding particular solace in a book about Millie Jane Cobblepot, an outcast of the wealthy Cobblepot crime family that resided in 19th-century Gotham. Despite her boyfriend Kyle's kindness and her best-friendship with Kyle's younger sister "Maps", Olive continued to become reclusive, absorbed in darker thoughts and acting out in ways that surprised even herself. [1] The Ghost of Gotham Academy With that out the way, I still say this is a poor comic for reasons beyond me not being in the target audience. I don’t know how a tween girl thinks, never will and have no interest in finding out, but I’m going to guess that they look for the same things most people who read for pleasure look for: good story and characters. And Gotham Academy has neither. Go Seduce My Archnemesis: A heroic version; the entire escape plan depends on Kyle pretending to be Louise's crush. Karl Kerschl’s art gives this comic the look of a Saturday morning kid’s TV show, which fits in with the overall tone of the book, so it’s appropriate. It’s set in Gotham so it’s very gothic but more so in a Harry Potter sense than in any scary, imposing way. I didn’t hate it but I felt it was quite bland especially in how that particular Batman’s rogue was sanitised to look less terrifying. The headmaster’s design made me smile though, taking his aesthetic cue from the performance artist supervillain look that’s so prevalent in Gotham!
