now i am convinced that this book was written by me because funfact my bf and i had, almost the exact same dynamic, as henry and alice. the fantasy – or dare i say, magical realism – aspects played a bigger role in the story than i originally thought it would. The plot itself was also exciting; I truly could not put this book down and finished it in one sitting.

After another ceremony where Alice is celebrated for her grades, she has to share the spotlight again with none other than her ridiculously handsome nemesis, Henry Li. She cannot do it without the help of her rival, Henry, to create an app to offer her secret services at a cost. The build and slow burn for him wasn’t directly shown to us, but cmon we know he has liked her for a while! She makes certain decisions that had me questioning her, but I can understand why she made them, because she was just trying to help her family, and speaking of which, I also loved her dedication to family.

Alice never really seemed too much into Henry at all, so the random flirty scenes didn’t really do much for me.

Liang references a few characters who might have further knowledge of this phenomenon, but it's never explored further than a knowing look or vague comment. it was barely even a kiss they had in the end lmao but the way everything came together was chef’s kiss. The author does a good job in showing just how much privilege wealthy students with powerful parents can have. the bonus chapters are to die for we see a lot of henry’s feelings for alice and i was blushing and kicking my feet and screaming into my pillow because it was all so.

I like how Henry always viewed their rivalry as friendly while Alice saw it as much more serious, because she had so much more at stake with winning. When I saw the cover and read the blurb that mentions a Chinese American girl who is aspiring, brilliant scholarship student monetizes her power to pay her school fees, I expected to read something more dramatic, depressing and sad. The only thing that kind of was a minus for me is that it was so short and how abruptly it ended… I wish we could’ve seen more of Henry and Alice together at the end and maybe even an epilogue. gasp* but i loved him sm fr, he was so sweet and studious and cute and I WOULD DIE FOR HIM did i mention? i’ve spent my whole life longing to be seen, but i’ve also come to realize that when people look too closely, they inevitably notice the ugly parts too. it makes me almost dizzy, thinking about the stark differences in realities, what will be and what could’ve been.

When a sudden ability to become invisible appears, Alice takes matters into her own hands and decides to profit off this power. i 100% wasn’t expecting the commentary on racism and classism, but it is something that should always be talked about when it’s appropriate, and it was woven into the story so well.i thought this was just a cute romance, which it was not 😭 that's my own fault, though, because the synopsis pretty accurately sums up the book. between a girl who suddenly can become invisible, the shenanigans she gets up to, as well as the looming crush on her academic rival, this has a great set-up for an entertaining time. there was a time in hs when i also broke down in front of a history/social studies teacher because i thought i did bad on a test. she's witty, sarcastic, knows what she wants, and is completely oblivious to the fact that henry likes her! Partial scholarship student, Alice Sun, is top of her class -well actually tied for top of her class at Beijing International Boarding School where the wealthy are plenty.
