The art is printed on Hahnemaühle German Etching paper (310gsm), a conservation-grade high quality archival paper. We were lucky enough to get to catch up with one of our absolute favourite illustrators, Carll Cneut. For his contribution as a children's illustrator he was UK nominee for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2006.

The bold colours and simple rhyming story of ELMER'S DAY will enchant very young children, who will love learning the lines by heart. Slowly building up a collection of books from my childhood for my daughter and seeing 30th anniversary edition is starting to make me feel slightly old! Little hands will love turning each sturdy page and meeting favourite friends from the world of Elmer the patchwork elephant. He decides to cover his colourful patchwork with elephant berries because he thinks that the grey elephants are all laughing at him.Aided and abetted by his ventriloquist cousin, Wilbur, Elmer pretends to be blown away on the windiest day. At the first hint of a chill in the air, Elmer's friends start complaining about the cold, so Elmer decides to show them what cold weather is really like. In the early part of his career, McKee regularly drew and sold humorous drawings to magazines and newspapers such as The Times Educational Supplement, Punch and the Reader’s Digest. On their journey, they meet lots of other animals, each of whom have different ideas about which story Elmer should tell Stella and Mel at bedtime. Since then there have been numerous Elmer books, a wide range of merchandise and a TV series, with the latest Elmer book being released as recently as 2016.

I was a painter as well and my paintings were squared up, a bit Paul Klee-ish, and one day I mixed the two," he says. Following their happy reunion, the elephants reassure Elmer that they love him because of his differences, and not in spite of them, and they celebrate by painting themselves in multicoloured paint (and Elmer paints himself grey), in recognition of Elmer's unique appearance and personality. If my son was an elephant, he would be an elephant like Elmer: yellow, orange, red, pink, purple, blue, green, black, white. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.Elmer the patchwork elephant is different to the rest of the herd, his desperate to fit in with the the group and goes to great lengths to achieve it. Frames are Fine Art Trade Guild accredited which means they meet strict conservation standards and are built to last for generations to come. The elephants decide it’s their turn to play a trick on Elmer: all of the animals must pretend to forget his birthday tomorrow! Elmer the Patchwork Elephant” by David McKee was originally published in 1968, and has been in print ever since. However, as Elmer is the elephant who makes everyone smile and laugh he can’t himself and soon exposes himself as the lovable character he is.

He was very keen to name all the colours he saw, and very keen too to spot and identify all the animals in the jungle scenes. David McKee was born in Devon and went to Plymouth Art College, where he had a traditional training. For older children, discussions could centre on that it is not always necessary to try and change to fit in, as we all have something unique to offer to others. The primal focus of the story is on ‘Elmer ‘who is an elephant that does not resemble the other elephants in his herd. You can guess the gist of what's coming, of course - but this isn't your usual, ruggedly individualistic 'Be yourself and screw everyone else! A wonderfully upbeat and powerful tale that celebrates the uniqueness of the individual - and provides one of literature's best-loved characters too. Explore our beautiful Elmer gifts, as everyone's favourite elephant explore the jungle around him with his friends.
