In a switch from the henning mankell novel recenyly read, we have a mystery here which is not resolved until the end. Robinson is good, very good, but I'm afraid that he's not quite in Rankin's class although it has to be said that he's done well to keep the freshness of Alan Banks after a long run of books. On his very first play, a violent helmet-to-helmet collision knocked him off the field for good and left him with an improbable side effect - he can never forget anything. It was too early to determine the level of investigation yet, but the super needed to know what was happening.

Afterwards Jane begins to experience nightmares of a strange man and starts seeing him in her waking life, making her increasingly unable to distinguish the dream world from the real one.Dirty Dick' Burgess does the equivalent of a 'cameo' if you are a novel character, but it's really small this time. Anyone who loves a good mystery should curl up gratefully with a cuppa to enjoy this rich 10th installment of the acclaimed British police procedural series. Despite the rituals becoming more bizarre and sexualized, Jane continues to attend the sect's rituals.

Then John Bristow walks through his door with a shocking story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry - known to her friends as the Cuckoo - famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The characters being pursued are in a Porsche; they have a head start, and the driver is very familiar with the road. Fans of the series will find enjoyment meeting up with favourite characters again but if you are new to the series do not start with this one as it is not representational of the series as a whole. Inspector Banks' private life is a main feature of this novel and I enjoyed that aspect very much and once again it also was left with a bleak uncertainty, leaving one curious as to where his personal life will go in the next novel. During intermission at the famed La Fenice opera house in Venice, Italy, a notoriously difficult and widely disliked German conductor is poisoned—and suspects abound. But Banks soon discovers that Silbert was an allegedly retired spy, and he begins to wonder if all is as it appears. Billy's a dodgy accountant for politician and racketeer Pink Harrison, who is about to come unstuck. DCI Banks has a new lady friend named Sophia, one who is considerably younger, and he is spending all his time in London with her. The detective, in a nick of time, does save the day, not only preserving his own skin and that of his five extra-terrestrial buddies, but even convincing the galactic civilization to permit humanity to retain its newly developed teleporter technology.
